Coyotes 

Residents should take the following actions:

• Keep pets indoors and watch small dogs while outside, even during the day
• Put up and/or repair fence; fences should be more than 6 feet high with no gaps (be sure to check with your HOA for any building restrictions or architectural review submittal requirements)
• Don't leave bowls of pet food or water outside
• Walk pets on a leash and accompany them outside
• Keep cats indoors
• Do not feed feral cats
• Keep garbage in sturdy container with a tight fitting lid
• Keep compost in enclosed bins and do not include animal matter such as bones or fat
• Clean up area around bird feeders
• Keep fruit trees fenced or pick up fruit on the ground
• Minimize clusters of shrubs, trees and other ground cover and food plants

Don't run, but act aggressively, yell loudly and use noise making devices when coyotes are seen; portable air horns, motor vehicle horns, etc.  Throwing rocks can also be effective.

The coyote resembles a small German shepherd dog. Shades include black, brown, gray, yellow, rust, and tan. Coyotes also have shorter, bushier tails that are carried low, almost dragging the ground, and longer, narrower muzzles than dogs. Adult coyotes weigh 20 to 35 pounds, with males being slightly larger than females. At the shoulder, an adult male coyote is about 25 inches tall.
