Dear Brushy Creek residents,
Although you might not think of November as prime lifeguard training season, dozens of Brushy Creek MUD aquatics staff members may beg to differ.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, about 35 BCMUD lifeguards spent an evening training for atypical rescue conditions as part of annual District testing. Wearing clothing that included sweatshirts, hoodies, sweatpants, and leggings, the aquatic staff took turns jumping into the Sendero Springs Pool.
BCMUD Aquatics Manager Dylan Totzke said the lifeguards were tasked with swimming 200 yards fully clothed and without stopping. Totzke said the point is to have the guards understand that for every item of clothing they wear to stay warm, they are adding elements that affect their ability to respond quickly.
“This teaches them the ratio of warmth to drag and reminds our lifeguards that they always need to be ready to hop in the water regardless of weather conditions or temperature,” Totzke said, adding that every participant passed the test this year.
The guards also practiced basic water entries and rescues during the two-hour training session, he said.
“I’m proud of the dedication and commitment that our guards have to ensuring safety for the community of Brushy Creek,” Totzke said. "They are showing the true embodiment of the Brushy Creek Life."
